The brave souls that took on this adventure with me were my mom, brother and his girlfriend. I must say all of them were super patience with both Nina and I (if one is not having a melt down, the other is).
We started off the trip early in the morning, driving through Illinois, Indiana and finally in Kentucky. Nina was such a trooper on this ride. Between sleeping and playing she was pretty happy the majority of the ride down. We did have to stop more often for feeding/pumping/changing breaks. I did two things on the ride down that I've never done before, and will probably not do again....pumped in the middle of the McDonald's (thankfully I had a cover with me) and ate a foot long hot dog.
When we arrived in Kentucky, we made our way to our cabin. It was so cool!!! Built right into the hills of the Red River Gorge it was a beautiful spot. Probably something we will not experience again. Even though the location was amazing, we ended up being switched to another cabin because of water issues. We spent our first night venturing into town for food, making dinner and turning in early.
Our first full day we went hiking. We climbed all the way up to the natural bridge and Nina LOVED every moment. She was in her baby bjorn and kept sticking out her hands and feet like she was flying. Austin talked me into taking her through a small passage way to get to the short trail that leads to the top of the bridge where you can walk over. I'm so glad he did, it was amazing! The view was breathtaking and Nina loved the wind.
After climbing down we went back, packed up and moved on to cabin #2. This cabin was so beautiful. Two big bonuses were the hot tub and porch right off the kitchen. We used both the first night. Stephanie and Austin made us an awesome dinner on the grill followed up by some relaxation time "Hot Tubbin'" it.
The next day was another hiking day. We went on this little trail right by the river to walk over the swinging bridge. Then, we drove to the top of a mountain and had a picnic and another short hike to a get lookout point. Another beautiful day full of amazing views.
The following day was jam packed. We drove an hour and a half to see a Shaker village. It was an 80 degree day, perfect to be outside. We learned a lot about the Shakers, had a wonderful lunch and stopped by Lexington on our way home.
Thursday and Friday were mostly relaxing days for Nina and I. We spent time at the cabin. Gigi was nice enough to give me a little break on Thursday to watch The Amazing Race with Austin and Stephanie. Thursday night we went and had some traditional Kentucky barb-e-que and Friday we went out for Mexican.
Saturday we all got up early and made the trek back to Wisconsin. Nina was still a little trooper, but her patience had worn a little thin, so we had a few "moments" in the car. All in all, I still cannot believe how good she was on her first trip.
We had such a blast and are so fortunate that we got to go and that we have people in our lives that will make adjustments and take the time to go places with Nina and I!
I'll try to post more pics of this trip later, I was a bad mommy and didn't take many myself, so I need to get the rest from my mom.
Next up? A night at our family cabin with Nate's sister and her family! Let's see how we do with no running water and no electricity. :)
